Roadmap 2031: Principles First in an Unprincipled Age

Whether we’re talking about education at the personal level, where each learner has their own unique path to success, or at the systemic level, where the intricacies and sophistications of the bureaucracy are not for the faint of heart, education as a public institution is a complicated proposition.

However we approach it, the risk is to get caught up in its trappings and lose sight of education’s inherent value to society.

We see this every day.

• Test Scores

...among so many other things.

This is why it is so important that our journey crafting the road map starts by identifying the principles that guide us.

Against this backdrop of the era of anything goes, knowing and staying true to our guiding principles is important to craft a clear vision without the distractions.

• They provide a reliable compass for making decisions, keeping consistent, and staying focused on long-term goals.
  

• They offer rules of thumb when new challenges or opportunities pop up, so that we don’t waste time debating best ways forward in these times of crisis.
  

• They help balance competing needs, so that we don’t fall prey to the trap of seeing the work as wins and losses.

As stakeholders watch us operate in alignment with our principles, they learn to trust what they can expect. We are less susceptible to the allure of short-term easy answers, building a more unified community where everyone feels seen and heard. And with daily tasks tied directly to big-picture principles, it’s easier for all stakeholders to agree on what success looks like.

In crafting our guiding principles, we identify three organizing pillars that infuse this work:

I. The Advantage of Social-Emotional Learning

Children understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and achieve their goals.

II. The Value of Critical Thinking

Learners actively and skillfully analyze, evaluate, and interpret information to form reasoned judgments and make informed decisions. And,

III. The Power of Civic Engagement

Learners take individual and collective action to address issues of public concern that improve the well-being of a community.

Corollaries to these three foundational values that serve as leadership action items for the Roadmap are:

Designing leadership as a part of the learning

Provide children with opportunities to learn and practice leadership as part of the learner experience.

Changing the power structure of student leadership, and,

Empower learner leadership groups to participate in decisionmaking, feedback, and accountability.

Changing the power structure of governance

For successful implementation, education transformation shifts leadership structures so teachers help shape decisions rather than simply implement them.

With these in place, we embrace the four

principles of our work:

I. The Critical Role of Learner Voice

Children moving from passive recipients of schooling to active participants in shaping their learning, their school communities, and their futures.

II. Leading with Community at the Core

Learning spaces becoming collaborative, community-connected, innovative places, moving beyond isolation to partnerships and real-world engagement.

III. Designing Learning Spaces as Incubators

Shifting from compliance to purpose-driven work, grounded in equity, flexibility, and a clear focus on meaningful learning for future readiness.

IV. Creating the Conditions and Cultures for Transformation

Becoming more agile and responsive to the humanity of the work, helping everyone become active participants in preparing children for their future.

Next Steps

As we chart our course on the Roadmap, these principles provide us a sense of balance as we navigate through the twists and turns, disruptions and discord, nuances and minutiae of education as it exists today, keeping us on track with our destination in mind: education transformed. Together, we can remove and resolve the impediments that have boxed us in, and open up new ways forward that truly meet the needs of society, stakeholders, and students.
