Roadmap 2031: The Educator Imperative

Public education has often relied on bureaucratic routines justified by the familiar explanation that “this is the way things have always been done,” but disruption places systems under pressure that reveals where old practices no longer produce the intended results. Roadmap 2031 asks us and the communities we serve to examine routines honestly and decide what is preserved, redesigned, and released.

For educators, the age of disruption presents both challenges and opportunities:

The challenge:  navigating a system that is simultaneously under political pressure, under-resourced, and under scrutiny, while maintaining the trust of children and families who depend on it.

The opportunity:  using this moment to address long-standing inequities, redesign structures that no longer serve children well, and reclaim the democratic function of education. It’s not only a technical question; it’s a human and civic one. What do we want for children, for communities, and for the future? The decisions made now will shape the conditions of their lives.

This Roadmap does not pretend to see the 22nd century, but it argues that transformation begins now. By making 2031 a five-year target for visible progress and sustained momentum, we position ourselves to be adaptive and responsive to the global society continuing to emerge.

These are the questions we have vetted in developing a way forward:

What is worth keeping from past practice? What must be completely removed? What must be changed? What is entirely new? This is our shared opportunity. The work begins now.
