"I received very specific pieces of the ‘how to’ to take back to my school. Everything was transferable to staff AND students, which is completely unique. I began thinking about tangible and actionable next steps that I can actually implement. Everything I learned today can be brought into school."

Priya Venkat, Dean of Student Supports
UP Education Network

Traditionally, only those who hold formal power benefit from leadership training. But what if every student and educator in our school systems received the support they need and deserve to develop the identity and abilities of a leader? In what ways would the world become a more equitable place?

In this book talk, Maureen Chapman and James Simons present a framework from their book, Leaders of the Class, to help educators teach (and develop in themselves) the social-emotional skills of leadership. The authors outline four foundational leadership conditions and practices, present a sequence of leadership units that pair with one’s academic content, and introduce replicable routines to ensure every learner builds the skills to motivate, persevere, communicate, and collaborate in the classroom.

In this session, you will:

  • Internalize a framework for thinking about, developing, and teaching the social and emotional skills of leadership

  • Learn simple strategies to support student motivation, perseverance, communication, and collaboration when engaging in academic work

  • Have the chance to ask the authors questions about their framework and its application

Catapult growth with a research-based sequence of units for developing in secondary students the leadership identity and skills needed to motivate, persevere, communicate, and collaborate. Authors Maureen Chapman and James Simons present a flexible, resource-rich curriculum featuring routines and supports to pair with existing academic curriculum to foster engagement and achievement for every leader of the class.
