Happy Women's Leadership Month!

MaryAnn DeRosa is a Worthy Educator and a Champion for providing tools that help educators find their professional identity.

She is a Professor of Curriculum Design for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners for the Relay Graduate School of Education, and she has served as a Learning Needs Specialist/Lead Data Coordinator at the American School of Milan, Italy.

Hypatia (c. 350–415 CE) was an Egyptian-Greek philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer from Alexandria, Egypt. She was one of the most prominent intellectuals of her time and is often considered the first known female mathematician. As the head of the Neoplatonist school in Alexandria, she taught philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy, influencing students from across the Mediterranean. She is depicted along with known philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle in The School of Athens by Raphael (1509-1511) a painting in the Vatican (Pope Julius II’s private library).

But you may not know about her. Why would you? More importantly, how could you know? Since the contributions of women throughout history have often been overlooked or underrepresented in traditional historical narratives, you might have missed it!

This is why we have a special month to celebrate women and other historically marginalized people (which means people who historically have not been discussed or represented or given attributions for their accomplishments). The special month is not intended to be divisive or turn attention away from any other group, but to take a moment to highlight and recognize efforts. That is all. That is all.

It's like a birthday party. No harm done! And everyone is invited to this one! Happy Women's Leadership Month!
