The Quiet Power of Thank You

by Dr. Marc Cohen

November is Gratitude Month at The Worthy Educator!

I’ve spent decades in education, as a teacher, principal, and leadership coach. I’ve seen how a simple “thank you” can change the tone of a conversation, repair a strained relationship, or remind someone that their work matters. In schools, where the work is deeply human and emotionally demanding, gratitude isn’t a luxury; it’s essential.

Gratitude doesn’t erase challenges. It doesn’t dismiss inequities, burnout, or heartbreak. But it reminds us that even in the hardest moments, there is still good. There is still connection. There is still purpose.

Gratitude in Action

I think of the assistant principal who checks in on every new teacher each Friday afternoon just to say, “You’re doing great. I see you.”

I think of the counselor who leaves handwritten notes for students who’ve had a tough week.

I think of the instructional coach who celebrates small wins in PLCs, helping teams see progress they might otherwise miss.

These aren’t grand gestures. They’re intentional acts of leadership grounded in gratitude. And they matter.

Personal Reflections

This year, I’ve been writing a book on leadership, one that challenges traditional notions of data, culture, and instructional practice. Each chapter ends with a reflective tool called The Link and a practical exercise called Leadership in Action. Why? Because leadership isn’t just about knowing, it’s about doing. And gratitude is one of the most powerful things we can do.

I’ve also been reflecting on my own journey. My wife, Amy, has spent her life serving others as a special educator, counselor, and now as a mental health therapist. Her work reminds me daily that growth and healing begin with being seen and valued. That’s what gratitude does. It sees. It values.

A Challenge to Educators

So here’s my invitation to you this Gratitude Month:

Start with your team. Who needs to hear that they’re appreciated, not for their output, but for their presence?

Look beyond the obvious. Gratitude isn’t just for the high performers. It’s for the quiet contributors who hold the culture together in unseen ways.

Make it a habit. Build gratitude into your leadership routines. Begin meetings with shout-outs. End emails with appreciation. Keep a gratitude journal focused on your school community.

Gratitude as Legacy

Ultimately, gratitude is about legacy, the kind of culture we leave behind, the kind of stories people tell about our leadership, and the kind of impact that outlives our tenure.

In this season of thanks, let’s recommit to leading with gratitude, not just in November, but every day. Because in education, where the stakes are high and the work is sacred, gratitude isn’t just nice.

It’s transformational!
